The course is designed to provide students with a framework for understanding the issues of sustainable urban development and developing the ability to critically and thoughtfully apply appropriate concepts in the process of urban design. Emphasis is placed on understanding the relationship between the needs and aspirations of human beings and the environment, knowledge of the premises of designing sustainable urban spaces in the local context, the obligations and responsibilities of architects towards clients, users and the wider society. The need for sustainable transformations of cities and new approaches is underlined by numerous international documents, and the role of architects in modern conditions is becoming a leadership and innovation. Teaching is conducted through an integral multi-methodical procedure for solving a real problem of a given local context. Students are trained to critically and integrally consider the local context and interests of users, research and select appropriate experiences in establishing new solutions of the urban complex to achieve the quality of space according to the values and principles of sustainable development. The Design studio process enables students to create and present projects of urban settlements using different media, with an understanding of users needs and strategies for environmental protection, regulatory and structural requirements, aesthetics, technical requirements for sustainable construction and cost control mechanisms.
