Studio M01 U “Ecological Urban Design” (EUD) explores the relationships between nature, culture and design, and aims to help students understand and apply an ecological approach to urban design and architecture. It does so by following a student-centred and a place-based pedagogical approach that enables students: a) to learn on the relationship between nature and culture in a specific socio-spatial context, as well as on the environmental/sustainability issues and problems, b) to integrate theoretical and experiential knowledge into the process of urban design at a different problem and spatial levels, and c) to be creative in developing place-based and place-specific design solutions.
Study Unit Studio M01U EUD is organised through the interrelated project, seminar and workshop courses, which support a complex system of abstract/theoretical and experiential learning cycles that combine research and design phases and weave together to help students produce design projects. The work in studio EUD encompasses theoretical and practical lessons and tasks for group and individual work, designed to enable students to acquire awareness, knowledge, skills and abilities to design ecological urban design projects under the general Studio M01 thematic framework on education.
