GREEN HARBOR – AN ENVIRONMENT SHAPED BY NATURE
The main goal of the course is to inform students about the problems of design and construction in complex urban conditions and for them to acquire relevant knowledge and skills for designing public buildings. The subject location in the studio is Zone 8 of the Line Park in Belgrade. The task is based on the programmatic-spatial analysis of a given location – the current situation at the site – between reconstruction, free development of new programmatic content, and development of new concepts and ideas. The research of the existing state is the starting point of the design process, which is aimed at understanding the specific situation in the direction of creative action in the formation of a new urban environment shaped by nature-based solutions. The topic of the project task deals with the spatial-programmatic architectural analysis of zone 8 of the Line Park in Belgrade (which extends from Beton Hala to the Pancevo Bridge) and its immediate surroundings near the Port of Belgrade. The location in question is drastically changing due to the newly planned construction with planned cultural, artistic, commercial, educational, and residential contents. The spatial framework covers an area of 2.5 hectares, recognized as an exceptional spatial context for revitalization and design consideration of new facilities in the former industrial zone around the Port of Belgrade, where the modern principles of urban design are being thought out. The basic research focus is on the analysis and re-definition of the context of the location – spatial, historical, cultural, economic, and social, as a place that carries the course of its history and purpose, a place to which new modern significance should be given by designing a green port. Green Harbor (Zelena Luka) is interpreted as a harbor, i.e., a habitat (of people, plants, and animals), an artistic point, and a stop – a port as a new epicenter of the city. The main critical analysis is based on the study and application of nature-based solutions and blue-green design in the construction of public buildings, i.e., spaces and ambiences shaped by nature. Studio classes will be directed at the multidisciplinary research of spatial structures and the programmatic requirements of research disciplines and public facilities, with a focus on new methodologies from practice and planned programmatic settings in the given environment.
