GHETTO: SUPERSTRUCTURE
The aim of this assignment is to interpret the ghetto as a kind of privileged spatial programmatic isolation, viewed in the context of current social circumstances. The proposal of a new value for the ghetto as a superstructure investigates the optimization of the program, space, and technology of the hermetic architectural structure in order to achieve its flexibility to absorb special uses through their interactivity, forming a new, specific model of community living in the city of Belgrade. In the phase of working on the master thesis, students will formulate the subject matter and suggest a potential location, which they will present in the form of a visual and written essay. The formulation of the subject matter implies a new interpretation of the ghetto as a superstructure based on a joint and individual consideration of the given thematic framework. The proposal of a potential location implies the independent selection of a place that corresponds to the formulated subject matter. The visual and written essay involves the presentation of the subject matter and location.
GHETTO: SUPERSTRUCTURE is a thematic framework for researching the programmatic and spatial structure, content, and form. Students are expected to propose a ghetto as a superstructure – a homogeneous architectural structure involving the construction or reconstruction of existing fragments or wholes, whose usefulness and appearance can be interpreted as an additional or new value outside the framework of its otherwise inherent utility.
